The Half Life oF ATOM
Are you in half life?
A group of oddly matched young people attend a weekly support group for youth in crisis. Angry and anxious they take each day as it comes under the guidance of a less than helpful youth worker. A new addition to the house in the form of Atom MacMillan and his penchant for story-telling makes life suddenly more interesting. Atom is growing up in half-life. He is convinced that as external forces cause atomic particles to decay he is also decaying. Atom fights normalcy and the pressure of an unknown future with stories. This strange way of connecting with those around him becomes a catalyst for dramatic change in others and eventually in himself.

The Story
Half Life of Atom, a verbatim play, was first developed in 2011 to give voice to the lived experiences of young people in residential care. Born out of a desire to amplify the stories and struggles of this often-overlooked demographic, the play featured the raw, unfiltered voices of its participants. Over the years, the project has undergone significant transformations, incorporating new voices and perspectives while retaining its core theme.
The updated version explores the importance of storytelling as a means of self-discovery and understanding, highlighting how fiction can serve as a coping mechanism for navigating the complexities of reality. Drawing inspiration from the struggles and triumphs of its characters, the play showcases the power of narrative to spark change and foster connection. Through Atom's unique lens, the play demonstrates how stories can help individuals make sense of their world and find their place within it.
