BUYOLOGY

A study of our need to buy

Buyology is a non-naturalistic look at the consumerist nature of modern society through the eyes of twelve disillusioned shoppers. Body image, media manipulation, materialism and planned obsolescence are unashamedly tackled, tagged and taken home in this exploration of what it means to be a consumer, and the ethics, lifestyle and personal growth that is bound up in the things that we buy.

The Story

  • The start of the show begins with Eva, Boudica and Evey opening. Eva shares that she doesn’t want to perform the show anymore. The whole cast argues against her and convinces her to get on with the show.

  • We then meet Thea and her girls (Kath, Jen, Regina and Janine) who are getting ready for Thea’s possible proposal. Thea wants her proposal to go perfectly even making comments about her bridesmaids imperfections.

  • Chris then comes on stage and starts to share his feeling with Eva and Boudica becoming irritated and leaving the stage. He than has an argument with his wife and Chris’s daughter asks him about a woman from his work. Chris and the woman talk about a Christmas party and the scene ends with Chris saying to his wife he’s going to be late that night. Chris than walks up to join the que to pay for his things.

  • Jude the cashier is serving Jamie whose card is declined and Jude mentions that there is a store credit card but Jamie dismisses her and starts randomly talking about what she’s buying. Jamie’s cards keep decline and goes on tangents about her life. The others waiting in line begin to lose their patience, with Jane asking how long Jamie will be. Jamie insults Jane about her outfit making her look fat. Jude says again that the card has been declined with Jamie losing it and having a breakdown. She than collects herself and ends up applying for a store credit card.

  • Paul and Lee are shopping in a store when they spot their teacher Mrs. Nichols. For them it feels wrong seeing a teacher outside of school comparing it to a dog wearing pants. Mrs. Nichols spot the boys and wonders why they are staring at her. Lee talks to Paul about how he saw the food who gives out samples at the swimming pool.

  • Act 2 begins with 5 cleaners (Rick, Mel, Mo, Nat & Ash) walking around the shopping center cleaning as they discuss the long term impacts of consumerism and waste. Then the conversation turns slightly to how big companies are also at fault. As they exit a large group of customers are in line to purchase something that will make them truly happy, after a moment of pure joy it begins to fade causing the items to be thrown to the tree.

  • As the scene shifts, a man (Stanley) is seen attempting to hand out flyers informing people of international buy nothing day. Unfortunately his flyers continuously fall to the ground but as he picks them up he meets Rose, a fellow activist. They then chat about their shared interests and eventually decide to go out to a vegan café.

  • The scene changes to a lady (Jane) handing out samples to people at a shopping center until a shopper (Melanie) who comes up and smothers Jane in questions and comments about her life yet it is quite clear Jane has no interest, soon enough Jane manages to get rid of her. The moment Melanie leaves Jane begins the eat the samples herself but begins to regret her choice and spits the samples out onto her hand. But her mother spots this and questions her actions as she does so, Jane reminisces back to when a childhood bully (Helen) picked on her for her weight. When she steps out of the memory she talks about how the world doesn't help people like her and that they would never understand her problems.

  • When she leaves the three narrators (Boudica, Evie and Eva) enter and tell a poem of society in the form of the once was a lady who swallowed a fly but instead saying things like there once was a man who ate himself with pride etc.

  • As the set changes it shows a shop owner (Jude) serving a customer until she turns to the audience talking to them about how successful her store was and that her friends have made it clear that moving over seas with an organization "Safe Harbour" was a terrible idea. Jude becomes frustrated and speaks to the audience about things she's seen around the world and how we need to change our ways in the future.

  • To conclude the show all the actors come on stage to say all of the lessons taught in the play of Buyology.
